About Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys was born Alicia J. Augello-Cook in Harlem, New York, on January 25, 1981. Keys began playing piano when she was seven, and learned the music of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. At the age of fourteen she wrote her first song, titled "Butterflyz," which was later included on her debut album Songs in A Minor. At 16, Keys graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School of Manhattan as the valedictorian of her class. Although she was accepted to Columbia University, she decided to pursue a career in music instead of attending college.

After signing with J Records, Keys released Songs in A Minor on June 5, 2001. The album went on to sell over ten million copies and turned Keys into the best selling new artist of 2001. She followed up her first record with The Diary of Alicia Keys in 2003. It sold over 618,000 copies in its first week alone, and went on to sell over 9 million worldwide. Keys' next two albums were equally successful, with the 2005 live album Unplugged reaching platinum certification, and 2007's As I Am going triple platinum. 2009 was a big year for Keys, as she released her latest album, The Element of Freedom in December and was featured on Jay-Z's hit single "Empire State of Mind."
